Working Towards a 1.5°C Future – Suominen’s next steps in climate work
Suominen has set a target of reducing its Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. The target was set in Suominen’s Sustainability Agenda for 2025–2030, published in March 2025.

“At Suominen, we are committed to creating a sustainable future by aligning our efforts with the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, along with many key players in the industry. Reaching the goal requires systematic change and actions,” says Noora Lindberg, Director, Sustainability & Marketing at Suominen.
Suominen has already made significant progress in reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, achieving a 24% reduction per ton of product in 2024 compared to 2019. Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources while Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy. As an example of our climate work, four of Suominen's seven production sites are operating on fossil-free electricity, and efforts are ongoing to transition the remaining sites.
A majority of Suominen’s emissions, however, come from Scope 3 sources which are indirect emissions across the value chain, excluding purchased energy (which is covered in Scope 2). “Reducing these emissions requires close collaboration with our entire supply chain to identify the most effective ways to cut carbon impact. We are eager to take this journey together with our partners throughout the value chain,” Lindberg adds.
For deeper insights into sustainability priorities in the nonwovens industry, Noora Lindberg will be speaking at the Suominen Innovating in Sustainability Seminar, taking place on March 19–20, 2025, in Arona, Italy. The third edition of the seminar will bring together professionals from across the nonwoven industry to explore the latest advancements in sustainability and innovations.
